A Relaxed Outdoor Wedding at Hawke Barn, Devon

Steven and Tilly’s wedding at Hawke Barn in Devon was full of meaningful moments, and a quiet kind of beauty. With the ceremony set down by the lake, guests sat on hay bales under grey skies that thankfully held off the rain – a soft, calm backdrop for a genuinely heartfelt day.

I arrived in the morning to photograph some of the preparations. Tilly and her bridesmaids were in great spirits, hanging out while Hannah from Bright Eyed Beauty worked her magic with hair and makeup.

One of the most moving moments came when Tilly shared a first look with her parents. Quiet, emotional, and full of warmth—it set the tone for the rest of the day.

Later, in the cottage garden, Tilly and Steven had a private first look. These moments always feel special. The nerves drop away, and the connection becomes real. It was one of those honest pauses before everything picks up pace.

The ceremony took place outdoors by the lake, with guests seated on hay bales. Even with grey skies above, the setting felt peaceful. Anna from Howie and the Flowers had made a beaitiful display, not to mention the colourful boquets for Tilly and her bridesmaids.

After the ceremony, we got a few portraits before Steven and Tilly stepped through a willow arch into a shower of confetti — one of those classic moments where everything feels light and celebratory.

Guests enjoyed garden games and drinks served by the Gatehouse Trailer Bar, while I moved through the crowd capturing relaxed, candid moments. One of the best parts of the day was Steven and Tilly’s decision to include my Party Cameras – these are small, vintage-style digital cameras placed around for guests to use. They were a hit, with everyone getting involved in documenting the day from their own point of view.

Dinner was a laid-back hog roast from North Devon Hog Roast, with everyone eating together at long tables.

After speeches, we slipped away for some golden hour portraits. The light finally broke through, casting warm tones across the fields and making for some of my favourite images from the day.

As the evening kicked off, everyone gathered in Hawke Barn for cake and dancing. With live music from Sam Dowden, the party carried on late into the night — full of singing, movement, and connection.
