Emma and Ben’s Wedding at Higher Eggbeer Farm in Devon

Dark and Moody Weding Portrait at Higher Eggbeer

Emma and Ben’s wedding at Higher Eggbeer Farm in Devon was a day felt warm, personal and full of character. As a Devon wedding photographer, the combination of a candlelit ceremony, dramatic music and beautiful evening light made this a brilliant celebration to capture.

I had already met Emma and Ben several times before the wedding, including a venue visit and their pre-wedding shoot, so walking into Higher Eggbeer felt more like arriving at a friend’s celebration. Both were getting ready in the main house, with hair by Debbie Louise Hair and makeup by Beauty by Tori Cleal. Their morning was relaxed, full of laughter and small details that showed how much thought they had put into the day.

One of the stand-out parts of their wedding was the music. Emma and her bridesmaids walked down the aisle to “Time” by Hans Zimmer, perfectly timed and incredibly atmospheric. The barn at Higher Eggbeer is already dark and moody, and combined with candles and the music, it created one of the most dramatic ceremony settings I have photographed.

After the ceremony, confetti and group photos, we stayed in the barn for a few creative portraits. The candlelight, rustic textures and rich shadows worked perfectly with Emma’s dress from Brides at Waterfield and Ben’s Moss Bros suit. Meanwhile, guests enjoyed drinks and canapés while taking in the atmosphere. The florals and styling by Deer Leap Farm added to the warm, rustic feel of the barn.

Emma and Ben had filled the afternoon with thoughtful touches. They used vinyl records as place settings, displayed a photo from their pre-wedding shoot as a guest book and hired a full crazy golf setup from Portable Putts, which was a huge hit. Garden games from Swaddledown added even more fun to the courtyard and helped keep everything relaxed.

As the sun began to lower, we stepped outside for portraits in the soft evening light. This golden hour gave us some of my favourite images of the day and was a nice contrast to the dark, cinematic look of the ceremony.

When it was time for the evening celebrations, Emma and Ben had planned a first dance that blended “Home” by Cinematic Orchestra into a special Etherwood remix. It felt personal and emotional, and it set the tone for the party ahead. The Roustabouts Collective kept the dancefloor full long into the night.

Emma and Ben’s wedding was full of atmosphere, creativity and genuine joy. A real pleasure to be a part of.
